However, as therapists it is important to recognise that these techniques do not work for everyone, especially those who have experienced severe trauma and who have been so used to feeling unsafe that it is difficult to connect with themselves and the present. Indeed, the suggestion that certain grounding techniques work for everyone can make those who have experienced trauma feel inadequate and unsafe because they think that there is something wrong with them. There isn't, and it's totally ok if one or more grounding techniques don't work for clients. The most important thing is to respect the client and validate their feelings and experiences in order to create an environment where they feel completely safe.
