Traumatic events can have a massive effect on our mental health. Support for those struggling with trauma is often hard to access, and there is a lack of awareness around the subject. We are trialling a new trauma counselling service. Thanks to @sjaynetrust who are funding this service, those experiencing trauma can gain access to help through our charity. Our CEO, Paul Mills explains why the service is so important: “There is already a proven demand for this service locally, and with more and more pressure on the NHS, this will only grow. We would like to thank the Sarah Jayne Charitable Trust for this backing, which will help the local community significantly.” Georgina Syrett, a trustee with SJCT says, “Helping to establish a new service with Wiltshire Mind is really poignant. The Sarah Jayne Charitable Trust is also relatively new and was set up so we could make a difference in our community. Wiltshire Mind have identified a real need for mental health support as a direct result of trauma and we’re humbled that we could help them make it happen.” The Sarah Jayne Trust are also funding online videos which raise awareness and help start conversations about trauma, and the help needed. Paul Verwoert, SJCT Trustee says: “We’re acutely aware that the pandemic has caused a huge demand for mental health services whilst fundraising opportunities have decreased. Many people don’t realise that local Mind branches are completely self-funded, so we’re delighted to be able to support them at such a challenging time,” The Trust’s main corporate sponsor @hartsfieldgroup are also donating much-needed IT equipment such as desktops and screens to support other volunteer counsellors at Wiltshire Mind. In keeping with our focus for January in working with asanas/postures supporting the root chakra, helping us to ground, rest and root. ❤️CONTRAINDICATIONS! In case of chronic lower back or knee injuries or issues, it is advised not to practice this posture in the traditional sense, however we have explored other variations and have other variations throughout the week that may be suited to those who are working with injury/conditions/mobility. With any practice we do, always work within your own range of limits and abilities and listen to your body. 𝐓𝐰 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐚. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐚? Mania is not a fun state to be in and unfortunately for many people, especially those suffering from Bipolar 1 Disorder, mania can be a regular occurrence when not properly medicated. Mania can quickly become chaotic and self destructive when it builds. In extreme cases mania can lead to lethal levels of harm. The best way to handle mania is through the use of early intervention techniques. Getting ahead of the rollercoaster is the best way to control it before it grows into something dangerous. 4 𝙒𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝘿𝙚-𝙚𝙨𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝘿𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙘 𝙈𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 Take space. Remove yourself from whatever or whoever is triggering you. Utilize ice/the cold. Cooling the body is an amazing way to soothe our central nervous system. Hold ice, stick your head in the freezer, it sounds weird but it’s super effective at grounding you and calming you. Go for a walk or run. I know for me mania feels like an explosion of energy. I can run miles, I can yell or argue for days, I feel invincible and unstoppable. Exercise is an amazing way to release some of this build up of energy. Practice breathing exercises. When feeling manic it’s easy for our nervous system to go into overdrive, and it’s easy for the mind and body to be confused and feel as if they are in danger. Practice different breathing techniques to help soothe the body, which in turn will help soothe the mind and the severity of the episode. And 𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐚, be patient, don’t yell, don’t overwhelm them or call them names. What you may see as someone acting crazy or carelessly, is someone who needs extra support. People experiencing mania aren’t thinking properly, their perspectives are clouded and their emotions are running high like a live wire. Now is not the time to be anything but empathetic. Mania can be scary, but it’s a hell of a lot easier to understand and eliminate when everyone involved does their part.
