The corn harvest at Somerset Place began in October, with enslaved women forced to harvest most of the grain. Crews picked the corn and pulled up the stalks, while others loaded the harvested crop onto flatboats. From there, enslaved field workers guided the boats down the network of canals and ditches to the barnyard where they stored the corn inside three large barns. Meanwhile, enslaved men plowed the newly harvested fields before the ground froze, using the cornstalks, excess shucks, grass, and weeds to fertilize the ground in preparation for next season’s crop. . . . . . . . . . . . . #SomersetPlaceSHS #NCHistoricSites #NCCulture #ExploreNC #ExploreCarolina #VisitNC #LocalHistory #HistoryNerd #HistoryLovers #ThisPlaceMatters #AfricanAmericanHistory #BlackHistory #TellTheFullStory #Plantation #Slavery #FallHarvest #HistoricSites #SlaveryArchive #WashingtonCounty #CornHarvest #Canals

Imagem: Jean Manzon. Queen Marie-Antoinette was executed at the Place de la Revolution on October 16, 1793. Abhorred by the public opinion, her death was the conclusion of an unguided extravagant lifestyle that was maliciously exaggerated, and a symbolic response to crash the resistance of the Ancient Regime. Detached from the increasing economic and social issues of France, Marie-Antoinette lived a sumptuous life at the court in Versailles as customary with her royal position. Painted at the age of 17, the dauphine is depicted in a refined court dress, wearing a silk gown with embroidered stomacher and a lavish jeweled necklace; representing the power of a monarchy that would fail twenty years later. What’s in your smoker? Day 16 of the #31daysofbees pushed us to think of a different way to interpret this prompt. And we took it more of “what goes into a smoker?” Smoke has undoubtably been used since the earliest days of honey taking and beekeeping. Whether that was a smoking bundle, torch or hand-held fire. In company of course, with some primitive veil to protect from stings. The issue of finding a source of smoke, making it safe, keeping it lit and not burning the bees has been an issue that confounded beekeepers for as long as we humans have been managing them. Finding the best method of calming the bees was even a topic of a popular contest hosted by the Crystal Palace in Great Britain in 1874. Using a smoking pipe was even used for a bit, and the resulting mouthful of smoke encouraged to be blown into the hive while working by the keeper. A.I Root, a famous beekeeper in American history experimented with a corn popper. Using rotten wood and a hot coal. But he quickly learned of the fire danger of an unattended fire pot sitting on or near your hives. A bellows with a 20” tube was even used. But it was not until Moses Quinby improved upon the smoker chamber with a cone configuration and T.F Bingham attached a tube to the end of the smoking chamber to create “wind” to stoke the flames that we saw rapid improvements and tweets made. Quinby quickly learned that the fire went out as soon as he stoped blowing in the tube. Originally, this (what had to be quite ridiculous-looking contraption) sold for what was then, an astronomical asking price of $2. It wasn’t until Bingham, that the horizontal chamber and tube was improved upon and the canister turned vertical and the air input placed under the fit pot that we get the smoker we have today.
