Rest. Sleep is scarce but could rest more? Sleep has been shown to improve immune response and also help in healing wounds/scars. But lets be honest - you are not going to be getting an uninterrupted 8 hours in these first 8 weeks. But what about rest? Can you close your eyes for 20 minutes when the baby goes down? Can you lie on the ground beside them at tummy time and just rest the mind and body? It seems like being superwoman is high on our agenda as mums. We are so capable, and I think it can become to easy to try to work out, cook, clean, socialise and keep on top of our new job - mother at the detriment to our wellbeing. 'Nap when the baby naps' is hands down the one piece of advice I wish I had taken. I look back now and see that the dinner could have been simpler, the house could have been messier, the work could have waited.... but sometimes it takes burn out to realise what is really important. Take it or leave it, but getting more sleep and rest WILL help in your healing journey. Both of these factors reduce the blood flow to your muscles and heart. This makes exercises harder than they are as you struggle to bring oxygen to places where it's needed . If one smokes more frequently, it could affect recovery as well. The blood flow stays low and there won't be as much nutrients delivered to where it's needed for muscle recovery . CL Lee et al, Int J Women's Health 2013, concluded that smoking increases female smoker's exercise fatigue while reducing maximal aerobic capacity. There are many more studies like this. .
