you ever feel super confident in your body one minute and then in that same day just feel bleh.🥴yeah that’s been me recently. when I get like this I remind myself of all my athletic abilities. I love that I train to run fast, to have endurance, to be strong, flexible, and an all around athlete. I love that I fuel my body to train, rather than diet to become smaller. so 3 key takeaways from this post: 👀 1. don’t believe the fad that you need to do ONLY ab workouts & excessive cardio to have them. engage your core in your lifts and focus on stability. add some extra core work if you want! AND you don’t need to restrict food to unrealistic standards. being mindful and obsessive about foods are two different things. there is help if you need it. ❤️ 2. what makes you feel confident is your actions. not how your body looks. body dysmorphia is so real. so when you start to negative self-talk, remind yourself of your amazing traits that aren’t physical.💛 3. it’s normal and okay to be self-critical sometimes. but try to replace those negative thoughts with positive-affirming ones. be patient with and love yourself. there’s only one unique, special you. 💚 my DM’s are always open. As a tattooer, I witness clients body shame themselves almost daily, women especially are ruthless to themselves and so I just wanted to throw this out there… Baby. Listen to me. Everything about you is magnificent. I know you might squirm in your chair a bit over any imperfections you may perceive about yourself, but you are HUMAN in a glorious human body and you owe perfection/mannequin status to no one. And can I just touch on the fact that the thinking we were brainwashed into believing about our bodies was rooted in patriarchy anyway? Keep it. Your thick thighs? Mah gawd. Your belly? Cute af. It’s okay to be soft, soft is beautiful, soft is sexy, soft is for snuggles, ok? And if you’re anywhere else on the spectrum where you feel uneasy in your body, please know that the confidence you wear is a super power and has nothing to do with your shape. Own it, flaunt whatever you’ve got, feel good in your body because it’s yours and it’s given you so many opportunities to experience joy in this life and your body deserves for you to celebrate it. You’ve got stretch marks? So do I. You feel uneasy because you’ve got some cellulite? Your body is real. You jiggle when you walk? Praise!! Never apologize for not being photoshopped in real life. We’re all a hot mess sometimes, it’s our right and my personal favorite. I love the realness. I never want anyone to feel as if they should be polished for me, bring your rawness, babies. Last night (pictured here) I got all dolled up and went to a fun event… and as I sipped my vodka cocktail, a woman I didn’t know told me I was “the cutest pregnant lady ever!” (Me: “…….😳”) She went on to say “I can’t believe you got all dressed up tonight, if I were you I’d just be in bed all the time.” ✨In case you are new here, I am not currently pregnant. I’m so grateful to have my 2 year old and 3 year old sons ❤️ but at times I have struggled with the body changes that have come with my motherhood journey.✨ I posted about this last night on my stories, and got probably 200 responses from women telling me about: the waiter who interrupted her hot date with a new guy to ask when she was due…… the cvs clerk who told her, days after her miscarriage, what an adorable baby bump she had…….. the random coworker who said “let me guess- you’re pregnant!” in front of everyone when in fact she had just gained weight following a family member’s death. 💔💔💔😖😖😖 The stories went on and on. Heading into the new year, let’s all flip the script. No commenting on other people’s bodies. ❤️ Everyone is going through their own stuff, and we have the ability to support one another rather than to accidentally pile on. ✨Swipe for more thoughts ✨ (And ps: if you’ve accidentally made this blunder…. you’re ok!! I’m insecure about my natural curls. Growing up I saw many makeover trope movies where the before hair looked like my natural hair texture. Think Princess Diaries… a huge part of the makeover is taming her curly and frizzy hair into the exact style you normally see me wear. I even heard that curly hair wasn’t professional from people I looked up to. It also can’t be ignored how much that perspective on natural hair is based on racism (just like fatphobia is). So I’ve internalized all those messages and I’m working on unlearning them. Much like in my early days around body positivity, I find it very easy to appreciate other women’s naturally curly hair (and plus size bodies) but I am struggling to love it on myself. So what am I doing to correct that? Trying to wear it natural more often. Trying to fill my feed with more curly hair owners. Trying to only engage in positive self talk about my own curly hair. Wow that 🥗 looks so delicious! This is vegan food freedom! Whether it is a salad or a 🍔...it can still be vegan food freedom. Eat what you want and notice how you feel when you eat it. Eat it with intention. So, I notice that after I ate this 🥗...I felt bloated 😅😫 I realized that well I haven't had a big salad with this many greens in a couple of months and my body is just not use to it. So it is not the food...it is my gut. Next time I eat a 🥗 like this again I will be less bloated, I can choose to eat less greens, or choose to not to eat it at all. Vegan food freedom is about choices without judgment. You don’t have to love how you look, or even how your body works (or doesn’t work) to have positive body image. Don’t let this whole “love your body” idea be another way you are objectified and made to feel like you are ALLLLLL body and not SOOOOO much more than a body. If you take “love your body” to mean you have to love how your body LOOKS, that is the most fleeting, fickle, love imaginable. You’ll live with heartbreak every day. If your body only deserves your love when you like your appearance, that’s not really love, is it? ➕Love is not conditional. You deserve to love yourself in a much more holistic, deep and secure way. You deserve the kind of love that doesn’t take you on a roller coaster depending on how you look in those pictures or how your cellulite looks in that lighting or how many compliments you get on that outfit. You deserve that deep love - that love that comes from a place of compassion, understanding, respect. ➕Try to care for yourself the way you care for your loved ones. You don’t love them for their body, you don’t obsess over their parts, you don’t stop loving them when their body changes, you don’t shame them into changing their appearance for you. You want them to feel good, you build them up, validate them for more than their looks, love them for who they are beyond their body - for who they are, what they do, and how they make you feel. The more easily you can learn to believe someone when they compliment you, the more easily your internal dialogue will turn positive. Other people have a much more objective view of us than we do of ourselves. Take the compliments you receive without trying to explain, or sidetrack, or brush off. Take them as they are and start turning them into your beliefs! As a bonus tip-try giving other people genuine compliments more regularly. You will get such a boost by peoples’ reactions. Back to a little intuitive eating for you💗 ➡️Principle 2: Honor Your Hunger⬅️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ever been hangry?? I can share, from personal experience🙃, that hangry or not eating enough makes you irritable and not your best. [Let’s just stop there haha] ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Diets often teach us to suppress our hunger but I’m telling you, you can’t outsmart your body. Your body has a weight where it likes to be and when we try to change it, things can get out of control. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Your body thinks of a diet as famine and wants to hang on to all the food it gets, not knowing when it’ll be properly fed again. [To learn more about this, check out the Minnesota Starvation study]. If you don’t get what you need, your body can drive you to overeat, think about food AND slow your metabolism. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In order to feed your body as it needs, aim to consistently eat. Also be mindful of things that get in the way of your body’s hunger cues - like drinking coffee, diet soda or chewing gum (and emotional triggers!). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Listening to your body’s hunger signals is crucial, however IE is not just following hunger and fullness.
